CLKeenan Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Ok, my store is setup in New Jersey. Does this mean when shipping my products I should only charge tax in New Jersey or should I charge sales tax for wherever I ship. Second thing, what tax rate do I charge? The state tax rate for NJ is 6% but that isn't for every part of new jersey - do I let enter any product shipped to NJ as having a 6% sales tax? Also, if I am supposed to charge sales tax to wherever I ship, do I just charge the states sales tax? If so, does anyone have a copy of the all the zones for the US states? Sorry - I'm really confused here :(
bama Posted February 20, 2004 Posted February 20, 2004 I am no accountant, but you only need to charge sales tax for your state. This is what all the hoopla is about in congress about the internet tax. Anyway.....As for the 6% rate plus the city rates, I am not sure about the extra amount above the base amount. Mike
Guest Posted February 20, 2004 Posted February 20, 2004 This is for the US only. If your operation is in NJ then you charge sales tax only on sales delivered in NJ. If the order is for delivery outside NJ then don't charge sales tax. The rate charged is the rate for the location of your operation. Your state revenue department can tell you what your sales tax rate is. In most states you will need to apply for a sales tax number or resale number. You will have to keep track of in state and out of sales for your sales tax reports.
