heres a hint though, install it to a directory that can be accessed by direct IP or domain name, don't use any subfolders beyond /catalog (i.e. use www.yourdomain.com/catalog or 151.151.252.252/catalog, DON'T use www.yourdomain.com/subfolder/catalog).

also, I had troubles because I hadn't opened access to 777 to the /catalog director, or the config doc in the admin/includes directory BEFORE running the install. THEN BE SURE TO CHANGE IT BACK after install. I had this problem in the topic titled 'CONFIG PROBLEMS', Bear helped out, thanks Bear!

Hello I have down loaded oscommerce and ftp it to my public_html section. I have moved the admin file out to public_html also. Now I'm stuck? I do not understand the docs from there. I am not a programer at all. I'm disabled due to accident trying to get a small on-line store up. I need someone to guide me please. Please contact me here or at [email protected] Thanks! this might be so far over my head I need to forget it?????

NO WAY! This is great software, and really is relatively easy to use when you get used to it.

I wish it wasn't just before bedtime or I'd give you the long winded explanation, because I think the documentation is lacking quite a bit.

First, do you have a webserver running? Which webserver? Do you have MySQL installed? You will need to have MySQL installed and running (the hardest part of this task, plus I would suggest installing phpmyadmin too so that you have a graphical way to understand mysql).

As I mentioned you will also need a webserver. The two best choices, in order of preference, is Apache (the latest stable version, I think you'll want pre 2.0) or IIS. I have it installed on a Windows 2k3 machine running IIS. Of course, you will also need to have PHP installed and running too, but thats just a matter of downloading and installing like a regular windows program.

After you have these three items up and running and behaving properly, the installation of OSC is a breeze.

Let us know if you have these first to parts first, otherwise the rest of the explanation is moot.

Also, sorry for the shameless plug, but if you can't get Apache installed and running, nor MySQL, nor PHPMYADMIN, nor PHP, you can contact me through my company and we can set it up for you (these are involved processes that I would have to spend time and effort on, so there would be a charge for setting up your server for you). But, after we had all that squared away, the installation of OSC is easy. My companies name is C and C Web.com, you can find us through www.candcweb.com. We do great, quick work and we don't charge large development company prices (although we do a good amount of business), and best of all, for small companies we offer in-house financing on the big jobs.

Let me know if you need help setting up the servers, although I promise with a little elbow grease and brain strain you could get these installed yourself.

Or, if all that is already setup, let us know and we'll go from there!

Where might I download Apache server & mySQL to test it on my box. Ive already got a server for my site (Im just going to use OS commerce to build an all new site) which has PHP & access to mySQL. But just to test everything & learn it, I was going to setup my machine as a server until I understand everything. Also, Im not really familiar with mySQL short of know what it is. Do I build the database on my machine & then upload it to my server? Also, do I build the site on my machine & then upload it all to my server, or do I actually develope the site from the server? Im gradually grasping the procedure :-) But you are right, the Docs really do leave some things brief. Sorta talks to you assuming you already know what you are doing!
