airuma Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Hi, I am trying to install a contribution and it tells me to "apply the diff patch". Since I haven't done that before... what does that mean???
wizardsandwars Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Normally, that means to open that file, and reall and follow the directions to modify the code. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. airuma Posted February 17, 2004 Author Posted February 17, 2004 One by one... argh! That was what I was afraid off *LOL* I better back up everything again... :) Thanks!!!
1quicksi Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Incorrect A .diff file is a file create for the use with the "patch" command in Linux. I looked at a few of these and decifering them down to a line by line manual install is not an easy task. Although I have no place to complaign, I really dislike authors that use this and or just over lay files without including manual instructions as they typicaly will not install and or break your OSC shop. Using the patch command may or may not work on a modified store. knowledge base | Contributions | Search
wizardsandwars Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Incorrect Not necessarily. For the *vast* majority of OSC contributions, you will often find a diff file that contains instructions on how to manually make the changes to your code. In fact, I have yet to come accross a contribution that includes a diff file that actully is designed to use the patch command to automagically apply the contribtion. If this were the case, I agree, this would *not* be very good implementation. So I guess that the answer depends on the contribtion, however, I'd feel pretty comfortable with my 'Normally..." qualification. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. defender39 Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 sorry chris...from my experience the diff files are related to linux patch command.... please try to find one contrib thats otherwise... I have seen .chg files and readme's but not any diff files..when I see those damn diff files I get scared and run like a little girl

Check out the first 5 versions of this contribution. ;) http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...ns,1242/page,19 Seems like it could be a nice contribution...too bad no one could use it without a lot of work until just this past week when someone did the work to make it useable. Funny thing was that he took the time to keep updating it even though it was basically useless to most people...regardless of how many times that fact was brought up in the support forum. I know I downloaded it more than once and would start comparing the code, but eventually would run out of time and just use Staffelpreis instead.
wizardsandwars Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Well, there you have it. I stand corrected. I guess out of the hundreds of contributions I've installed, I've just never happened to come accross one that was designed to use the patch function. I wouldn't recomment anyone trying to use patch to install a contribution unless you know for a fact that your version is compatible, and that there we not any other modifications made to the impacted files. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.
