Your opinion on the layout of this store

Hi,

could you please take a look at my test-site and tell me what you think about the layout and 'look' in general. I can not disclose the purpose of the store at this point of time and i know it is difficult to judge without knowing what is going to be sold, but i am more interested in your 'general' opinion. A couple of details are not in yet (information concerning shipping, about us etc.) but this is of minor interest right now.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Best regards,

Marcus

THe boxes on the side look too big and the background used there doesn't look professional. The text for the categories in the middle is too small.

its laid out for 1024x768 or 1280x1024, not a good move as web deveopment goes.

Thanks for this reminder. I usually still get about 15% of my visitors showing 800x600 so i will consider changing it.

It's fairly easy to set up a table-based site to display well in all (or almost all) resolutions. Set your header table width as "100%", leave your left and right columns as fixed width by specifying the pixel width, and then specify the center column as "100%".

That's what I've done with my store. Click on www link to see it in action and try viewing it at different screen widths and/or resolutions.

Interesting that you mention the background of these two columns. I agree with you. I had a discussion with a friend of mine and he wanted to see some more colours. It is difficult to judge because it all depends on what you are going to sell.

In my point of view you are right. By doing this, the store looses a bit of its 'seriousness' or just like you said: It does not look professional.

Thanks for your feedback. It is really interesting to see that you feel the same about it like i do.

I agree with the others, change the column backgrounds. Once you add products it will be easier to determine the look and feel. Ill check back later

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I changed the column background to 'neutral' and also got rid of the boxes around the two columns. I also changed the width to 100% (for the whole page and for the content part) leaving the columns at a fixed width of 125 pixels.

A disadvantage now is: If you have a bigger resolution (like mine set to 1600x1200) either the font on the content part is too small or it is just a bit too wide.

Try changing your category listings to a 2-column display instead of a 3 and see if that fixes it up.

I did set it to 2 columns but put it back to 3 now because i have changed the total width from a fixed value to 100% (same for the content part) which fixes the issues of different screen resolutions.
