Countries and taxes

Hi

I'm based in New Zealand (NZ) where we charge 12.5% in Goods and Services Tax (GST) but only for goods sold in NZ. Items sold to other countries do not have this tax applied. All this is fine in the shop and it defaults to showing prices inclusive of GST. If a customer belonging to another country other than NZ logs in then the prices default to exclusive of gst which is correct.

A problem occurs when someone creates an account and selects the wrong country i.e set themselves as belonging to America Samoa instead of New Zealand. If they then edit their account details to change the country to New Zealand, all prices with in the shop still display without GST. If that person logs out and then logs back in they are still not seeing GST inclusive pricing as they should. In this scenario, I would of thought that updating the country to NZ would of enabled GST inclusive pricing for that user.

As a test I logged in to the site using a testing account and changed the country of my default address from New Zealand to Nigeria and the site updated from showing GST inclusive to GST exclusive. Cool. So I tried to reverse it by changing the country back to New Zealand and I'm still stuck with GST exclusive.

Any ideas? I'm stumped as to why I can change from NZ to another country and the system works fine but not the reverse.

I'm running osCommerce 2.2-MS2.

Thanks in advance

Amanda
