affiliate return question

I have OSCommerce installed at BeautySurg.com Plastic Surgery Imaging and have the affiliate return set to 30 days (or whatever the equivalent of that is in seconds B) ).

 

Here's my little problem: When a shopper is referred via an affiliate link with the appropriate affiliate ID, signs off before making a purchase or adding any items to the cart, and then comes back later and spends money, the affiliate is not getting credit. (If the purchase is made on the same visit, the affliate is getting credited).

 

So, my questions are... (and I've searched a million times in these forums already for the answers...)

1. Does the shopper have to add an item to his cart in order to be remembered when returning later to make a purchase, or is it enough just to be linked from the affiliate's site?

2. Is there a piece of code I need to add or change so that my affiliates can earn commissions just by sending the shopper who makes a purchase within the 30 day time frame, even if the shopper doesn't start a shopping cart or register as a customer on his 1st visit?
