Timeout reading all cagetories

Hi,

I'm experiencing timeout while reading categories data.

The database is rather huge (roughly about 40,000 categories

total, but only several sub-categories per level).

 

Apache instantly times out (even 300 seconds did not work and it's

too long anyway).

 

Is there any way to set up that osCommerce does not read all categories

at once? I would like it to read only subcategories of a single category

per user click.
