ravenmoon
Greetings, I am new to OSCommerce and managed to install and get the MySQL jacked in. I also installed one of the template add-ins but am not sure I want to go that route. My question is: is it possible (and advisable) to modify the actual files driving the store layout itself to add PHP calculating which graphic header to use? My store already has a rather specific, fixed layout and I want to fit OSCommerce to that layout if it is as all possible. I also want to elminate certain features that I don't need. Can I just comment those out? The template add-in I downloaded allows you to just take sections out but I'm not sure if it supported custom graphic headers. Thanks! ~ ravenmoon
paulm2003
Hi Christian, why don't you just try? If you already intalled one of the "template add-ins", edit the main template as you like and see what happens. If you downloaded the BTS, it "supports" anything that is supported by CSS, HTML, and PHP or wathever. It should be no problem at all.
ravenmoon
Hmmm. I think I had downloaded STS before. Does that also support php functionality the way BTS does? Is one better than the other? Thank you :) Ravenmoon
paulm2003
I don't really know the STS, but it does not support php. I believe it only allows you to change the main layout, but not the infoboxes and content boxes. I think the STS is like you only edit the HTML within the BTS main_page.tpl.php file. With the BTS you also can change the php and other code for the main_page and the infobox template(s) and the content file templates. But even with the BTS not every files is controlled through a template unfortunately. One advantage with the STS is that only a few files are affected by the contribution, so several contributions will be easyer to install in combination with the STS. ravenmoon
Thank you very much Paul. I think I'm gonna download both and see whatever I can see in either. I don't mind if some pages don't look templated as long as the main categories (this shop has no sublevels) and the product pages do. If the cart page doesn't, I'm not super concerned. I know I installed this ultra pics thing for multiple sizes, which I definitely need so I'm going to see which one it works best with. Thanks again! :) Christian
♥ecartz
The STS does handle boxes as well. Its limitations are that it can only use an HTML template (it's designed for someone who knows HTML but not PHP) and that it can get confused if the output of a page does not match what it expects. I think that it will also have trouble handling contributions that add boxes, etc. as it doesn't know what to do with them. Not sure how hard it is to add new stuff. There is a support thread in the contributions area if you want to read more. Hth, Matt Always back up before making changes.
ravenmoon
Well so much for STS. I can't add php as you said. I'm going to try to install the BTS thing in conjunction with the ultra pics contribution and see where the heck that goes. Thanks!
