What is the correct method to set up cookies

Okay, this problem has been asked and answered 100's of times, but frequently with different answers, and not with an explanation I can understand..... Hopefully, someone can tell me where I'm going wrong.

Overall, everything is working. I (and many others) can go through the site, order stuff, get it to stay in baskets, complete the order process, etc. No problems at all with the cookie settings. On the other hand, if I go back through the webstats, a lot of people are hitting the Cookie Usage policy page, which tells me it is not working completely. This is happening far more often than I believe is caused by either search engines or regular customers that have their cookies turned off.

I really have 2 questions:

1. Does anyone have a definitive guide on how to work with cookies and osCommerce?

2. If you do not 'force' cookies, how do you correctly link to categories and/or products so that osCommerce determines if it has to add the osCsid to the URL? I have replaced the menu system, and I have no idea how to make this work correctly with sids.

Site: http://www.quiltsyourway.com

Settings:

Force Cookie Use: True (I would prefer to use false)

Check SSL Session ID: False (is there a reason to use true here)

Check User Agent: False

Prevent Spider Sessions: True

Recreate Session: False

In configure.php, I have my cookie path set to '/', and my cookie domain set to 'www.quiltsyourway.com'

Thanks!

Dan
