Is osCommerce the right tool for me?

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum and to osCommerce and this is my first post. I'm building a website for a company that would like to display their products online but is not ready to do online sales *just yet* (may a year or so down the line). This company is in the business of selling telephone and computer networking systems to businesses. They'd like to have their potential clients to be able to go to their website, look at products they offer, and then be able to add them to their "cart" to get an estimate for how much their project will cost. Is it possible to get this shopping cart-like feature to operate with osC without the ability to buy?

Finally, they also are looking to have the capability that when someone selects something that requires installation, that the installation be added to their cart automatically.

Are these things possible with osC? I really appreciate any help you are able to offer.

Thanks,

Matt

First point - just don't use any of the payment modules, and then alter the text which says "This is the only payment method available" to something like "This is your estimated cost, please contact us for more details". That should do it. But your customer, if he doesn't want to do online credit card transactions yet, can simply install the 'cheque/money order' module, and people will pay by cheque and goods will only be dispatched when the cheque is received. I imagine that this is pretty much what they do now anyway.

With regard to 'Installation' this can be listed as with any other product and can either be provided as a separate stand-alone item or be tied to a particular product. You would have to add another category to the one which contains Goods, Tax, Shipping etc., but I don't see why this should not be possible.

Hi Matt,

You can use oscommerce for all of your e-commerce needs. I can set you up with a free demo to click around with. Let me know.
