pavansut
I am trying to install oscommerce on Mac OSX locally, to get to know it before installing it on my website. However, I have run into a problem very early on which I cant seem to know what I am doing wrong. Here is the error message >> FATAL ERROR: register_globals is disabled in php.ini, please enable it! I went into the php.ini file in /usr/local/php/lib/ and changed from register_globals = off to on [despite the recommendation otherwise in the file]. However I still get the same error. I would appreciate help from the experts. I'm a newbie at Unix and php, so if you can be specific about the steps that would be very helpful. thanks pavansut
pavansut
Its a shame that there is no "real' documentation that is provided with the software for installation on Mac. I had to hunt around for hours to get the software working. But finally i was able to find one on the web. http://www.macservers.org/feature-4.html The developers should consider adding the documentation provided in this website as a part and parcel of the software. I still have questions about individualizing the look of the software, but I guess some other soul must have put together a tutorial on it. I just have to look for it. Great software, and hopefully, great documentation to be included in future.
pavansut
I want to add to my original post here if it helps other people. Since the time I started exploring OScommerce, I found a host that offers MS2 with a simple point and click - which makes it incredibly easy to install the cart. I don't know what the policy forum policy is on recommending hosts, so won't put their url here. I am sure there are many such hosts, but my host was particularly nice in solving my problems and that always helps when one is building a site. So I don't mind publicizing their name. If you are interested in knowing about the host, please email me at pavansut[deletethis]@comcast.net. The entire set up took me less than 10 minutes. Most of the time was spent in customizing the store and creating a site to go with it! My website is at www.jayateas.com, and the cart is at www.jayateas.com/nfoscomm/catalog

Iggy
I think the register_globals needs to be set to "All" NOT "On" note its the 2nd register_globals you need to change hope this helps? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No. It needs to be set to On. You should also enable asp style short tags in your php.ini For changes to PHP to take effect you have to restart apache. If you don't know how just reboot. If you're having hassles install Aaron Faby's packages. http://serverlogistics.com/ Iggy Everything's funny but nothing's a joke...

The requirements are the same OSX to Windows to Linux to Unix. It just happens that if you're on a Mac running OSX you are working on one of the finest gui's ever grafted onto a Unix. Take advantage of it. Iggy Everything's funny but nothing's a joke...

♥Vger
This is a local install on Mac OSX. You'd have to be certifiably mad to want to use a Mac server for an online website. And I do own a Mac, and have varous osCommerce websites running locally for testing - but online ....never! Vger <{POST_SNAPBACK}> <Going off-road on the topic> Uh, OK. Same goes for Windows 2003 I would think. The only reason you'd run either OS X or 2003 would be application specific. ASP comes to mind on the Windows side. Or (urg) Frontpage. Of course... I'm not advocating OS X as a server. OS X is an excellent DEV platform along with being an excellent desktop. Having done development on both platforms (locally) if I can't have a Mac I'd bail for some version of Linux or BSD before running Windows just to get some decent tools. What platform do you prefer to do dev on? If it's not the Mac you should review your assumptions and give it a shot. BTW, did you just glance at the ServerLogistic's page or did you see the Downloads link? Iggy Everything's funny but nothing's a joke...
