Csid and Login

I want to create a link for the "login" and "create account to replace the standard:

 

"Would you like to log yourself in? Or would you prefer to create an account?"

 

The standard link uses the function - function tep_customer_greeting() - which I assume creates the Csid which is sent along with the url in the address field. I also assume this is used for sessions but I am not sure.

 

Here's my question(s).

 

1. What is this Csid used for ie sessions etc.

 

2. Do I need at as part of replacing the standard login and create acct links.

 

3. Is it created by the function? If so, how do I duplicate this link?
