SteelShepherd Posted December 28, 2003 Share Posted December 28, 2003 I was referred here by the host of our website, the "White Shepherd Genetics Project, " on ICDsoft. It's a RedHat server with MySQL and PHP support. The purpose of our project is to educate dog breeders and owners about the genetics of health and disease in order to reduce the rate of incidence of disease in our dogs by proper mating selection. We gather data on the genetic traits and health of dogs and provide a library of educational articles. Our focus is White German Shepherds, but lovers of any and all breeds can and do participate. If we can develop a good enough system that other breeds could benefit from, we'd be very happy to share it with them. Our website - wsgenetics.org - is very rudimentary and new. I am hoping to use oscommerce to enable fundraising sales and/or donations via the web, but I really don't know where to get started. I also hope to setup a database program which will calculate the probabilities of passing on ceratain genes when any given sire and dam are mated. I've been a M$, GUI only guy all my PC life and the transition to Linux (anything command line, really) has been daunting to me. I have SQL Server and Visual Basic experience that I hope I can translate to whatever I need to learn to make this project happen. What I need most is some elementary direction as to how I can best get started. Of course I'd also accept more active help if there are any dog lovers here who might want to volunteer to aid setting up the site.
