Disabling Categories functionality

Hi,

 

I use my own menu system and would like to do away with the Categories functionality, as I'm sure it's wasting resources.

 

Is there a quick & easy way? (I've also removed it from the column_left)

 

I don't know much about PHP, but gather it's related to the "breadcrumb"?
