Neo855 Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 Hello Everyone. I found oscommerce a while back for the fact that I wanted to begin to sell products online. I was going to set up a home server running the latest version of apache on a windows xp box. I know there are hosting solutions and such but i already pay for my dsl connection. I am capable of setting apache up and running oscpmmerce. I just wanted to know if this is a good idea And how are some of the other community members running there oscommerce sites. Thanx for any input :)
Guest Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 That would be a good idea, but there are several things you have to consider. 1) SECURITY!! This is the biggest concern.... If someone hacks through your web server, your whole computer is vulnerable. 2) SPEED Your DSL connection is only so fast (Not near as fast as a web server). Also, a lot of traffic to your site will GREATLY Reduce your own surfing speed via your connection. 3) DNS Your DSL may have a static IP address. If so, this would be okay. If you have a dynamic IP address, you'll have to register with a service that will keep updating your IP address so yoursite.com will redirect to your computer. I understand your concerns for saving money. I purchased a reseller account to host all of my stores on that I plan to develop. It's on a UNIX box with CPanel and Fantastico Installed. Fantastico allows for a 1 Click install of OSCommerce. I'm just installing my stores in about 2 minutes from my CPanel and then uploading my mods, db changes etc. This really saves a lot of time. The Fantastico CP installs the 2.2 release of OSC so it's very handy. Edited by DaemonJ to remove the commercial content.
Daemonj Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 In response to the topic, you are better off obtaining a shared hosting account with a web host. Once you are familiar with hosting and what it involves, then you might consider hosting the site from your box but definitely not right off. Overall you are better using a virtual account on a host's server. "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds.
