Not asking for Password

I am having a problem that is very recent. I am running the newest download with very few modifications. When customers try and login to my site as returning customers, there is a box for there email address, but not for their password. When they type in enter, an error obviously comes back saying, sorry, no match to either the password or the email, but on the new screen, with the error message, the box for the password mysteriously appears. It also appears if there is something in the shopping cart. Must be some part of the programming related to having text in the message line. I replaced the "login.php" file in both the languages and at the root level. Still, no box for the password initially. Any ideas what file could be causing this oddity? I have replaced a lot of them. -Mark
