handling of large product quantity w/ store admin

I was searching for posts about this issue but wasn't too successful.

Anyhow, is there anybody with experience handling a large quantity of products with the admin part of osCommerce. I could imagine that the store front itself would handle the amount without problems. But I see some issues in the admin part. Here are 'my' problems:

- extensive use of dropdown menues for products, customers, categories etc.

(imagine you have a dropdown menu with 10,000 items)

- Product attributes ... it might take years to assign all the attributes ...

- Does the category.php page-wise listing for products over a certain qty?

- specials.php ... select a product out of 10,000 ...

Is there maybe already a contribution for that problem?

Possible solution:

- switch store for small and large product/customer quantity

- when large qty, do not use drop-down menues, instead list products

page-wise and make it searchable

Thx

There is a categories.php mod out there that we installed. We run with over 50,000+ items in our store. It was very interesting how we had to hack the living #@$#$ out of Oscommerce. Definetly not meant for large scale operations currently.

Yes, it seems so. I see more and more issues which are good for a small scale store. But I believe with a few hundred products certain things are getting very difficult. I cannot imagine how to handle more than 100 products and assign product attributes like color and size to it. That is a job for a few days as every single item has to be selected and the each value has to be assigned. There must be a better way. Like selecting a number of products and then assign the same or similar values to them.

I will look for the categories mod.

The Attributes Copier contribution allows you to assign the same attributes to multiple products.
