rcraig
My understanding is the correct way to set up taxes (in the United States and for state tax to be applied only to sales in California) would be the following. 1. Select Configuration > My Store. 2. Set Country to United States. 3. Set Zone to California. 4. Select Locations / Taxes > Tax Zones 5. Click the insert button and in the Zone Name box type "California" and insert it. 6. Select Locations / Taxes > Tax Classes. 7. Create a Tax Class. (in this case "Taxable Goods). 8. Select Locations / Taxes > Tax Rates 9. Create a Tax Rate (in this case the Zone would be California and the %7.25) 10. Select Catalog > Categories / Products 11. Set each product to use "Taxable Goods" as the tax class. When I do the following taxes are being added to orders. However, The problem is people who order from outside of California are also being charged California sales tax. Please let me know if the above method of configuring tax is correct. I've read a great deal of information here in the forums and I cannot tell what is going wrong. Thanks.
scv
I am having the same problem. All customers are being charged tax, even if they are outside California. I have created: Tax Zone Zone Name: CA Description: California Tax Classes Tax Class Title: California Sales Tax Description: Sales Tax for CA Residence Tax Rate Tax Class Title: California Sales Tax Zone: CA Tax Rate: 8.2500 Description: CA TAX 8.25% Priority: 0 If you know of a solution or where I may have made a mistake, please email me at: info (at) escv (dot) com THANKS !! sneakyimp
i'm not sure, but i think this might be what you have to do: ASSIGN ALL THE ZONES THAT HAVE BEEN CREATED TO A TAX ZONE. 1) click on LOCATIONS/TAXES 2) click on Tax Zones 3) create 2 tax zones..."CA" and "US outside CA"...they will appear to the right 4) in the resulting items to the right, click CA and you will open the CA folder 5) click INSERT...select UNITED STATES and CALIFORNIA now here's the annoying part 6) go back to TAX ZONES 7) click "US outside "CA" and you will open that selection 8) click INSERT...select UNITED STATES and ALABAMA 9) repeat step 8 for EVERY STATE IN THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES EXCEPT FOR CALIFORNIA if there's anyone more experienced with this, could they please verify? i hope to get this set up today! hope this helps! rcraig
There is a trick to setting up the taxes and zones. This document is the best resource I've found. Wiki Documents - Tax Setup When you read the document pay close attention to the line "You think you're done but..." One of the comments made in another post to this topic said you had to setup taxes for every state in the union, I don't believe that you have to do that. dchockenberry
you only have to set up tax rates for your own state, for purchases made within your own state (as far as e-commerce business is concerned) tax isn't necessary if you are a sole proprietor with no employees (at least in my state of PA)
escv
something to note ... and often over looked. After you create the Tax Zone, you need to double click on the folder to enter this directory and then create the actual zone you need for your state. Click the insert button and select United States and then the State you want to apply this tax to. I hope this helps. -- RMG
sneakyimp
i *hope* you guys are right about it being simple, but i don't really think so. my oscommerce came preloaded with a bunch of different geographic zones but no tax zones....i suppose i could have just created ARKANSAS TAX ZONE and assigned ARKANSAS to it (my client is there). duh...that sounds simple. can't recall if i tried that specifcally, but whatever i set up was basically charging everyone ARKANSAS tax. creating a second tax zone (US outside AR) and putting all the other states there totally helped. mattolsen
I went right to the Wiki documentation and did exactly as it said. Here's the problem I get. With CA residents, it automatically applies the tax to the price and then taxes them again. So double tax. Wha????? :(
