mark754 Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 Hello all, I'm about to build my first osC site and will probably use Paypal (IPN). Just wondering how others' experience has been with Paypal on a commercial site? Are there any disadvantages to using it vs. a traditional gateway (not as seamlessly integrated, customer is taken to Paypal's site to enroll, additional steps to checkout causing abandoned transactions, etc.)? Thanks.
ironfront Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 I lose about 40% of my sales because customers are too stupid/lazy to use paypal. But everything else is so bloody expensive.
mark754 Posted December 7, 2003 Author Posted December 7, 2003 Wow, 40%...wouldn't that cover the costs of another gateway? How did you estimate the 40% loss? I use Paypal on another site and get complaints now and then from customers unable to complete transactions through paypal, but I have no idea how much potential business is being lost due to this factor.
ironfront Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 You can tell in osCommerce. Completed paypal transactions say "pending" where uncompleted ones say "paypal processing." It probably would cover the cost, yes. But I am currently shopping around for payment gateways that arent quite as expensive though.
Guest Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 When you think about it... The only difference between a traditional merchant account and Paypal is the merchant accounts charge monthly fees... Per transaction, Paypal sometimes is more expensive than a traditional merchant account.. There are a few other online payment schemes available (especially if you are Euro) like Nochex and PPPAY which charge pennies per transaction...

Except that merchant accounts dont make the customer sign up for there service which turns away a lot of customers. If you know of any payment schemes that are not p2p that are less than paypal, let me know.
Guest Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 Having ran a bricks and mortar... Your local bank with busniess/merchant account capability has always been a better deal than these ones I've seen online... The downside to a B&M bank tho is you have to have a minimum balance.
