Show and Hide Info boxes

I am new to OSCommerce and I am currently customising the interface. I?m getting on fine but I have a question. I would be grateful if someone could tell me if this is an easy thing to do or if I am getting in over my head. I know HTML very well and have a basic understanding of PHP/Mysql.

 

I want to have certain boxes on the home page like ?What?s New? and ?Latest Offers? but I don?t want these boxes showing when you go to a product Category or list ? I just want the list of products showing. I am using STS V8 Templates and can make different templates for most areas. I cannot find how to make a template for each category as it seems to run from the index.php template.

 

Is this impossible to do with this template scheme?

 

I hope this makes sense ? any ?pointers? would be appreciated.
