Hi, could someone kidly show me what this file is used for? I know it's security or something and is handy for my admin directory, but how do I configure it with a username and password?

It's a file in which you put directives which Apache(the web server) reads when accessing/serving up files from within that directory. A very common use is for directory-level access rights for groups and users. You can create your own users and groups to which it refers as well. If you need to set special access permissions, start learning about the .htaccess file directives in the Apache.org documentation... or just google around for more info.
