Attributes/Options help

I'm not sure I understand the Product Attributes/Options feature completely. If possible, I'd like to have a different model # for each color while retaining the same product name/price/weight/etc.

 

Any ideas on this? I think I'll need to modify the DB to move the model to the product_option table, but that kind of modification seems too drastic.
