Okay to use Search Engine Friendly URLS?

Hi,

I had orginally setup my store to use the search engine friendly urls, and now most of the search engines have me listed via this and when I turn it off, the links from the search engines not longer access the product. Will I have to just live with SEF's on? Anyone know how to do the reverse logic?

 

Is the Search Engine friendly urls setting safe when using cache?
