no subcategories shown in product listing

i installed the product column listing contribution and now i dont have any subcategories shown when i go to the highest category heirachy. for example, i have bronze category. under bronze i have children, fountain, table tops, etc. but when i go to bronze, theres no subcategories i can click to go the next subcategory.

 

i looked at the product_listing.php file and theres nowhere where it checks if there are subcategories and to display if there are. anybody know what condition i need to put in the product listing file? probably somehting like:

 

if subcategories > 0 {
display category1
display category2
...
}
