Idiots guide to payment options??

Can someone point me to an 'idiots guide' to payment options for osCommerce.

I haven't got a clue how to set these things up. What do I have to do so that I can accept credit card payments (and other methods of payment) from a customer. I'm completely new to eCommerce and don't know where to start, so excuse my ignorance. Do I have to set up accounts with banks / credit card companies??

Thanks.

I've already read all that, but couldn't find anything that explains how to set up payment accounts.

Surely its not as simple as just enabling it from within the admin -> modules -> payment page?

How does it work so that the money ends up in my bank account??

I don't know about where you are, but here in California it's pretty hard to get a merchant's account unless you have a brick and mortar store. You might want to look in to options like PayPal or 2Checkout; they're sort of middlemen for credit card acceptance and painless to set up.

Hope this helps.

OK thanks.

Its not actually for me, but I'm likely to be setting up osCommerce sites for people who do have 'bricks and mortar' stores. Which is why I know nothing about the merchant account side of things, as I've never had one personally.

Most of the shops I will be building the sites for will be able to accept credit cards, so if thats the case what happens if I the enable credit card option in the admin centre? Is the transaction processed online or do the credit card details get sent to the shop for them to process ofline in the 'normal' manner.

I'll also look into PayPal and 2checkout as options.

Thanks.

Yeah, that, I can't answer...yet. My clients are all little guys, no brick and mortar. But I'm working on one now and she has a merchant account. But we're still diddling with design and haven't even approached the shopping cart yet, so, I guess I'll be investigating it, as well. My guess is, it'd go through the bank that the merchant account is with, provided that bank provides that service, but I'm just guessing...

i would say going with authorize.net would be good. Ive read alot alot of laws and security issues, maybe someone can correct me in this. If you setup and authorize.net account then allow people to get verified that way then it takes the hassle of your server or your clients server. They have to worry alot about security issues..But of course your server has to be locked down so no one can access your database information and take credit card payments..Or you can open up the option that sends the credit card information to their email so they can run the credit card manually...

there is alot of options out there...

If you don't want to get a merchant account directly from a bank/cc agency, I'd suggest using Authorize.net, its secure, and is relatively easy. However, if you CAN get a merchant account, its a great deal, and will save you a ton of money.

If your clients have a 'brick and morter' store, they may already have merchant accounts. If that's true and if the volume of on-line sales allows it, then you can just use the included "credit card" payment module and the merchant can enter the cc info manually. Just an option to consider.
