php error: session id contains invalid characters

Hi All,

My PHP error logs for a site using an old version of osCommerce are showing this:

[07-Nov-2003 08:59:20] PHP Warning: session_start(): The session id contains invalid characters, valid characters are only a-z, A-Z and 0-9 in /home/software/public_html/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 67

Here's the 'offending' code:

function tep_session_start() {
   return session_start();
}

The only way (so far) we seem to be able to reproduce this error ourselves is if we insert some invalid characters into the PHPSESSID in the url string. So perhaps either a) someone is doing this deliberately and/or B) some search engine robot is scanning site and looking at a page that cause this function to be executed without valid PHPSESSID parameters.

Anyone else got any clues why this might be happening? Anything I can/should do about it?

Thanks v. much.
