Installation halted: step 2?

Okay, I'm really new at this. I just installed apache (1.3.27), apache-ssl, openssl (OpenSSH_3.6.1p2), php (4.1.2), mysql (4.0.13-log) and ZendOptimizer (2.1).

I created a user in mysql:

mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO osc@localhost

-> IDENTIFIED BY 'some_pass' WITH GRANT OPTION;

mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO osc@'%'

-> IDENTIFIED BY 'some_pass' WITH GRANT OPTION;

I ran:

mysqladmin create osCommerce

mysql osCommerce < ./install/oscommerce.sql

Now I'm running http://localhost/catalog/install/install.php

I think I'm on step 2 where I'm asked for: hostname, username, password, database, persistant conneciton, files/database. I answer those questions and the next screen loaded on my browser halts after the header. No error message.

only error message in /var/log/apache/error.log is

[Thu Oct 16 01:54:32 2003] [error] [client ######] File does not exist: /var/www/favicon.ico

but that shouldn't halt things.

Any suggestions? I'm really clueless here.

Did you name the hostname "localhost"?

Did you include the prefix that was created when you made your username and db name? (should be blahblah_username).

Try that, tell me what happens...

Also, what is this:

You should just be installing from http://localhost/catalog/install

If only I was the one helping you...

In the form I put "localhost" as the hostname.

Did you include the prefix that was created when you made your username and db name? (should be blahblah_username).

prefix? What prefix? Where do I find the prefix? I just put in username "osc".

http://localhost/catalog/install/install.php is just the file that runs when you goto: http://localhost/catalog/install/ My Apache isn't setup to run index.php as index.html. I'll switch it later though.

When you create a username and name your database, automaticly a prefix should be added to each of the names. Go to your phpadmin and click export. Then go to the bootm of the page and click go.

The report will have a the name of your database in it about three times, includig your prefix (should be "something_osc" in your case). the prefix for both the username and db name are the same, so given that "something_" really was the prefix, you should type in "something_yourusername" and "something_osc" for the username and database name in step two. Don't worry about making a password, if you have already, delete it.
