zero shipping on downloadable purchases?

How can I make it so downloadable product purchases charge $0.00 for shipping?

If so, you could use the table rate and set that price to 0.

I thought of that, except I want to charge flat rate (usps $3.85) if they want it by mail, and $0.00 if they download... and I prefer that they don't get to choose the shipping amount so no errors are made.

Figured out a way - just make two of the same product and configure Table Rate shipping - give one copy of the product a filename in product attributes attributes so it can be downloaded and a weight of 0 in the product editor, and the other with a weight that is appropriate for it's shipping rate in the table, in this case I put 1.5 pounds to make it charge 3.85.

 

I first created the table rates like: 1:0.00,2:3.85

 

So anything up to (but not including) 1 pound is free shipping and anything up to (but not including) 2 pounds is 3.85

 

I tried puting 0:0.00 and discovered that it's up to but not including, so a product with a weight of 0 was still showing up as 3.85 for shipping. So that's why I set up the table like that.

 

The only bad thing, of course, is that I have two of the same product in the catalog.

 

Can anyone think up a better way to do this?

I use zones rates and have downloadable products set at zero weight, in combination with Linda's Free Shipping contrib. Works great.
