What's the best image format

What's the best image format to use?

Looks to me that the .bmp is pretty lousy. Use .gif or .jpg

And is it wise to convert .bmp files to another format?

You are correct, bmp files are not suitable for use in web pages. A general rule would be:

 

Use jpg for photographs or complex images.

 

Use png for simple graphics.

 

Use gif for graphics with transparent backgrounds.

 

Of course this is only a generalization, and there will be many exceptions. If you are in doubt, save in all three formats and compare. If one of them doesn't look good, don't use it. If they look good, choose the one that gives you the smallest file size.
