How do i make the "new products" box 3 instead of

I want to reduce the new products box to 3 items instead of 9 as it takes to long for 9 images to download. How would i go about doing this? I also want to add 1px black borders to the images in this box. How would i do this as well?

Change the value in admin>configuration>maximum Values>New Products Module
