It seems like there's a simple mistake in english.php file, such as a missing semi-colon or something. Since there's a mistake, anything around that mistake is not interpreted correctly by the PHP engine. Fix this small mistake and the rest should be taken care of by itself.

May pay you to use an editor and upload your modified files the way things appear to be going - I hope you have backups before you change things.

I've been using WinSyntax now, some Australian poster mentioned it once here and it's great! It uses colorcoding so you can recognise what what is and after a while you just spot missing characters like that annoying ; (end of PHP code line) character.

Give it a try, www.winsyntax.com.

I would also recommend picking up "PHP & MySQL for Dummies" by Janet Valade and perhaps an HTML book. You don't need to be an expert if you're using osCommerce (I've noticed the modifications you have already made) but personally I have found I can do great things with just a basic understanding of things. My main problem is that I'm an extreme perfectionist so for my shop to go live I need quite a few more hacks, tweaks and changes :)
