wizardsandwars Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 I'd like for this software to do everything I can ever dream of. It needs to be able to account for *any* business rules that I might ever have. I expect that any functionality that I can think of should have already been thought of, and there should lready be a contribution for, and the contribution should be constantly maintained with all of the latest versions of OSC. I expect that if I do come up with fuctionality that hasn't been thought of yet, it will be immediatly coded by a resident expert. I expect that I should be able to completly change the look and feel of this website myself without having any sort of HTML or php experience, and no desire to learn it. If I have a question about something, I expect that my question be answered by an expert within an hour of the time of my post. I shouldn't be burdened by having to search throught the forums for the answer myself. When I'm looking for a contribution, I expect to be able to list the functionality that I'm looking for, and someone post the url to the contribution. I should be troubled with having to search through them all. When I want support, I expect to be able to use the PM and email systems in here to ask people to do work for me for free. If I want an answer bad enough, I expect to be able to PM several dozen people until I get the answer I'm looking for. I expect that I should not be troubled with rudimentary things such as forum rules. I expect that I should be able to ignore any and all forum sticky that contain the forum guidlines. Oh yeah, did I mention that I expect all of this for free? OK, now, snap snap, everyone back to work! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.
Guest Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 Ain't like it used to be around here anymore, is it? A little on the spooky side. Where's Linda? Where's Ian? Wheres's Jan?
Guest Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 What does those 3 peoples have to do with wizardsandwars comments? Regards The_Bear
Guest Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 Cause they are part of the core team and used to be here daily. I miss them. I miss the quality and content of the board as it was, say a year ago. Like I said, it ain't like it used to be.
amoun Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 Hi. I'm pretty new here and on a slow boat to china, but it seems you're not the only one who expects a pot of gold for a bent penny  Roger facts invariably distort the truth
halbert Posted September 6, 2003 Posted September 6, 2003 I understand the frustration of the newbies, and I also shake my head at the level of demands that people have on these forums. I personally am probably guilty of demanding quick answers too, but being a geek I know enough to use the search feature first before posting things. IMHO the problem stems from a lack of documentation -- yes, wiki and *edit* exist, but they're far from complete and only really touch the basic installation. And it's unclear whether the instructions in the sites apply to the current MS2 or CVS or whatever version people have picked up. I'd have given my eye teeth and handfuls of dollars for a OSC for Dummies type book - just a basic outline of the structure, where to look for variable declarations, where to start if you want to add fields, change boxes, set up SSL, change the looks and feel, and so on. Enough to explain what OSC does and does not do, and how to set up a basic store. As far as I can tell, this does not exist in any sort of cohesive form. It does exist here in the forums, but there's a lot of sorting and reading to do in order to find what you're looking for. I think it's a project that's at least as important as moving the OSC platform forward -- without adequate documentation the forums will continue to be inundated with the same questions over and over, and the people who post here to help others will get frustrated and leave. And that will kill OSC. Just my two-bit's worth... -al
radders Posted September 6, 2003 Posted September 6, 2003 I also spent half an hour last week trying to find the wiki and gave up in the end. I know I have found it in the past but I've know idea where. All I could find was a forum about hthe wiki!
amoun Posted September 8, 2003 Posted September 8, 2003 In the chit chat forum i asked if the forums could be split. At least one just for installation with the wike guide as the top sticky note with a second noye saying how to use the search facility. anything to lighten the laod of the installation and configuration forum. I did put the idea on a poll, baddly done I think, but only three people answered and one of them was me?? roger facts invariably distort the truth
