Customer address format UK style

Does anyone know of aa easy way to dispose of the STATE field so that the Customer address format is more like the UK. 'STATE' is currently a required field which I have no use for. I have already tried the contribution files for Account Signup Management, but that has taken out the SUBURB field, which I want to keep. I have also tried to edit the contribution file myself to put SUBURB back in, but keep getting errors. Any help, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
