lucilue2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 To all, I was going to install the osc shopping cart for a friend that sells watches. His website is the first that comes under the google search (not on the paid listings). He told me that google doesn't like pages that are created dynamically. So i got to thinking and I'm not sure if the osc cart creates pages dynamically ? If it does, then how do i win him over and google ? Thanks.
wizardsandwars Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 He told me that google doesn't like pages that are created dynamically. This is no longer true, and has not been for some time now. Yes, OSC pages are created dynamically. Any listing on google that is returned by a search that has a "?" ijn the URL is a dynamicly generated website. You will notice that there are lots of URLs not in the top listings of google with '?' in them. If that doesn't convince him, OSC can also generate URLs without the '?' in them. This feature is called "Search Engine Friendly" and is an option in your admin section. Best of luck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.
Guest Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 How can I get google to update the titles of my pages. the titles are very old
wizardsandwars Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Google will update when Google feels like it. You can't make Google do anything. All you can do is update your site. Changes to you titles can take up to 3 months or longer to update on Google. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. lucilue2003 Posted September 3, 2003 Author Posted September 3, 2003 Any listing on google that is returned by a search that has a "?" ijn the URL is a dynamicly generated website. You will notice that there are lots of URLs not in the top listings of google with '?' in them. If that doesn't convince him, OSC can also generate URLs without the '?' in them. This feature is called "Search Engine Friendly" and is an option in your admin section. I 'm not sure if i understand this. My question was if google allows dynamic pages to be on their top searched results. I believe you started out by saying yes but above (where bold) you say that they dont? my friends page is currently on the top (regular .html pages) and i told him life would be easier if he swithced over to osc and he said that because osc does dynamic page creation, his site will no longer be on the top ... Sorry for not understaning.. please clarify. :( thanks :D
lucilue2003 Posted September 3, 2003 Author Posted September 3, 2003 Question: I searched on google for pcr100 and the 3rd link says: TheBroadcastShop.com - PCR100 | Pouch, Cordura, For Lectro UCR100 ... and the url: http://www.broadcastrepair.com/sales/detai...p?partno=PCR100 this has a ? which is a dynamic age (as you mentioned above) and what i gather from above, this site is using a search engine freindly url ? so if i want him to use osc and i want his site to be where it is at the top then i have to make sure to turn on search engine friendly urls ? Thanks.
lucilue2003 Posted September 3, 2003 Author Posted September 3, 2003 one more thing. i have snapshot 5-18-2003 Configuration >> My Store >> Use Search-Engine Safe URLs (still in development) when i make it true: my url for product x becomes: http://www.crazyinluvwithu.com/product_inf...fc580891ea70b5d when i leave it at base setting (false) : http://www.crazyinluvwithu.com/product_inf...?products_id=31 any thoughts ? Thanks guys. i luv u all. :D
wizardsandwars Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 It looks to me like the "not" in that sentence is inadvertant. Sorry about that. http://www.broadcastrepair.com/sales/detai...p?partno=PCR100 IS a dynamic webpage, as you suggested. so if i want him to use osc and i want his site to be where it is at the top then i have to make sure to turn on search engine friendly urls ? Not necessarily, my sites have lots of '?' in htem, yet still enjoy very high rankings. However, there are a few small and obscure search enginges that do not like the '?'s and therefore, you might want to let your custoemr know that you have the options to use the SEF urls in OSC. Your SEF links, working as you described, are working exactly as they are supposed to. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. lucilue2003 Posted September 3, 2003 Author Posted September 3, 2003 thanks . you've been a big help. Hopefully my last question.... If i want to use Search engine friendly urls then why is it that when i turn it on, after the ? all i see the the oscid (random number) and why not the product name ? http://www.crazyinluvwithu.com/product_inf...fc580891ea70b5d wouldn't it be better if it was like this: http://www.crazyinluvwithu.com/product_info.php/products_id/31?whiteJewlery=osCsid=54f6ee7d26ada2cd7fc580891ea70b5d this way google will take people to that product page directly and the product name being on the url will help when searches are made????? I Hope i made sense. thanks.
wizardsandwars Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 Yes, that's a very good suggestion. That functionality doesn't exist in the stock OSC with SEF links on OR off. However, the "All Prod" contribution now comes with this feature, and it's easy to alter the rest of your website to include it too. We've implemented it in our websites, and I don't know how much it really helped, but it certainly didn't hurt. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.
