Parse error moved itself to admin page

Hello, this is my first post and the forum has been a great help to a newbie with limited computer experience. My problem is I tried to change the text in the english/index.php file and recieved

Parse error: parse error in /web/www.pilot2pilothobbies.com/htdocs/admin/includes/languages/english/index.php on line 13

It would not go away until I copied and uploaded a new and untouched index.php file from a friends newly installed osCommerce site. This corrected the main page back to the orignal, but the above error sits on top of the admin page now, and the text on that page looks a little funny. The tools work, but there the error sits.

And lastly, what is the easiest way for a newbie to create a new main page? I've read the wikki docs, read about the CuteFTP, and looked at the template contribution, but am still kind of lost as to the easiest way to change the main page? I haven't used these programs before but will figure your reccomendation out.

Thanks in advance. :?

I am beating it into submission!
