How To Require Attributes in version 4.0

Is there a way to require or force a buyer to choose the attribute in version 4.0 or newer?

if you will not provide option: please select - it will force to use at least first (default) option. On other hand attributes a bit depricated. People mostly using product groups (located in product menu). Thank You for the response, Is there a way, I could see some screen shots, the the settings / setup pages for the link provide, that would be a great help, they could be emailed if needed, or posted here

also is there a way to eliminate the no reply or messages for 24 hours on the forum, so I can ask or respond to the answers faster than a day.
