Sample Products Missing in Admin

So.... putting up an installation of osc on a server - it installed fine, and you can see the sample products in the catalog page... but....

 

when you go to admin you can't see the products or categories at all

 

you can add a new product in, it shows up in the catalog, but you can't see the new one in the admin area either...

 

any ideas?
