Total Appearance Customization

Hi guys, im new here. I'm doing a shop for a client using oscommerce, and i need some help with the custom layout. All help will be greately appreciated.

Here is the situation: The store is supposed to sell glasses, and thus it needs to have a more elegant and more importantly, simpler layout. The site www.wickedsunglasses.com/catest/ shows an example of that i want to do. However i am not sure how i should go about that. I thought u=of using this plugin: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1075 on an html front page of the site, but then it occured to me that if i link to the catalogues from there, the rest of the site will look the same. This is how i want it to look:

template.JPG

That would be the front page. And on the other pages, i want the space where the decorative picture is to be used as the catalogue space, showing the products. I searched a couple of turorials on oscommerce design, but the most advanced thing they show is to how change colors and graphics, which is not enough for this project. I will take all the help i can get, and thank you for those who respond! Thanks again! :D

If you read through the wiki docs you'll find info on removing columns and boxes, and on adding boxes. To achieve the layout you want you'd need to remove column_left, and move some infoboxes to footer.php, putting each box into a table cell.

IS there a way to arrange it horizontaly thought, like:

.: Home : Products : About Us :.

Etc....

Thanks for your help so far!!!

Sorry, I don't follow you. :?
Well as i understand that, oscommerce places the menu choices vertically, such as:

Home

Products

About Us

And so on. Could it be made to display it horizontally?

What you need can be done with some work - move the info boxes and call them in the footer -, the navigation in the header is easy as you can see from the default install.

So you want it to display across the top, like amazon? There's a contribution that lets you add categories as tabs, or you could hard code it if the links aren't going to change

Have fun. :D

BTW Your domain points to a directory listing because you dont have an index in the root. If you don't want people to see your oscommerce site yet, think about putting up a holding page there.

Um for some reason some people thought that i had designed the sunglasses site i linked to. That is not the case, i merely found it while browsing the Live Shops forum. I forget the name of the user who made it, but he had a panda avatar...:) Just do a search for wicked and you'll find it.

Thanks.

It dosent matter since the hosting i am using now is mine, and the site will not stay there. Once i complete the layout fo the site and some graphics, i will show it to the client and then he will buy hositng for himself and then i do the rest of my work. Also, a small question: is it me or does the tag <br> not work if put on the front page?

That would depend where you try putting it.

The TEXT_MAIN thing. Actually, i think it is working, but it does not show as a visible line like it should in html...hmm...maybe im just paranoid. Ok, so objectives for today: Move stuff to the right, and move more stuff to the footer. Aten-HUT! :D

Is the procedure to move a box from left to foot the same as moving it from left to right :?:

Also, in order to use custom headers i just replace the images right? Cause ive seen a couple of contributons that relate to this and im sort of confused...

Sorry, didnt know, i dont anymore.

I am having trouble deleting the New Products box in the index.php file. Not quite sure how much of it to delete. Anyone?

Find the table row for the new products and the separator line above it and delete them both or put // before the include part for the new products call.

To put a box in the footer - same as moving right to left and vice versa - just put include whatever

Pretty much. You may need to put them in a table to get the layout you want though.

Thats one way to do it. Possibly you're confused because the contributions use other methods? Pick one method & see if it works.

Sorry but I have to sleep sometimes - you were posting between midnight & 3am!

Ha, who needs sleep when you've got sugar and caffeene?

Thanks for the help, will do that. Also, many tutorials refer to using a multi-document text editor to edit php files that require code to be changed in many files at once, such as for example removing a column. This is thew first time i hear of these editors, any good ones you can point me at?

I found a search function that can be used with code in Total Commander, but you can't edit on the fly and im not quite sure if all the files that are listed as having the code for the left column need to have it removed. Is there a kind of list of files that contain this information and need to be changed? Or a multi-document editor?
