Top Site Design Tips 2003

I love looking through this forum at all the great sites that people put together. I wonder if anyone would like to contribute their top tips for site design or functionality from a user perspective.

It might make an interesting thread, and depending on the quality of posts could be a useful resource.

As a minor consideration I can't stand negativity, personally I like to focus on positive contributions we can all do without negativity, sarcasm and rudeness.

I'll start the ball rolling with a favourite of mine.

I always make the product background colour white. The majority of images and artwork from suppliers and manufacturers tends to show the product against a white back drop. If your background is white then the display looks professional.

If your background is cream, or pastel green, then it looks pretty until you see a product shot with the white backround and then it looks downright amateurish.

That's not to say that good use of colour can't be made throughout the site, just not the backrounds for the products. Keep it simple, keep it white!

I appreciate the reasons for moving the post, it's a shame though as the idea was to help all the store owners who post asking design related questions.

Does anyone say anything sensible in chit chat?

well i would say My Store is the place to post,

but than again how would i know.

On second thought i would like to share my knowlage, but i don't know how, so if you have tips for me please let me know, i'm not a tech writer but a person that has many ideas that work for me, and i'm willing to share but can't spend the time to write manuals about it.

BTW take a look at those.

I did originally post in My Store.

Anyway nice sites Greg. As for posting post away, the idea was for people to post a favourite design or layout tip.

Keep it simple overall. Lots of pretty graphics may look nice at first, but will wear down on the user very fast. Keep it simple and fast. Sometimes simple looks best anyway.

Get rid of all the extraneous clutter (like most of the infoboxes). The only one you should use (in my opinion!!) is:

categories

+ maybe the search box (if it won't fit in your design elsewhere)

The rest just clutter the pages, and can easily be broken down into code and added elsewhere.
