Modifying checkout?

Hi All,

 

I would like to modify the checkeout process in my store when ordering only certain products, i.e. I want to obtain some additional information and add some dropdown box's etc when my customers purchase product A but if they purchase product B I am happy for them to use the checkout process as it exists at the moment.

 

If anyone has experience of doing this or perhaps knows of a mod which might help please get back to me.
