michellesshop Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 Alrighty, I have no idea how this all works. So here's my situation: I want to set up a shop, just a regular ecommerce shop. I want to be able to accept credit cards and direct deposit. But that's getting a little a head of myself... How do I accept credit cards?? Do I have to go to my bank and set something uP? Does it cost money to accept credit cards? I understand you can do it with paypal etc... Do I need space on a secure sever... I heard somethign about that... or is this shopping cart based outside my website, and is secure?? Anyone from Australia? Do you need a business number to be able to accept credit cards? Ok, and about the credit card/driect deposit thing... will it enable different forms of payment? Or will they have to pay by credit card? And can I have my site looking as it is, but just implement the shopping cart? What sort of money is invloved here? Or is it easier to go with paypal? Please let me know anyone who does know! thanks very much, Michelle.

Yes - you need a merchant account - specific to online payments. Does it cost money to accept credit cards? I understand you can do it with paypal etc... Yes Do I need space on a secure sever... I heard somethign about that... or is this shopping cart based outside my website, and is secure?? Yes - you need to set up a suitable account with a hosting company - it will need to support PHP4, MySQL - a secure server is standard for a commercial website. Anyone from Australia? Do you need a business number to be able to accept credit cards? Yes - you will need an ABN - you will also need this to set up a merchant account with your bank. Ok, and about the credit card/driect deposit thing... will it enable different forms of payment? Or will they have to pay by credit card? There are contributions that can be added to osCommerce to enable direct deposit - this is perhaps the simplest form of payment and in wide use in Australia. And can I have my site looking as it is, but just implement the shopping cart? osCommerce is easily modified to achieve the "look" of your existing website. What sort of money is invloved here? Or is it easier to go with paypal? Please let me know anyone who does know! thanks very much, Michelle. Payment services generally have a setup fee of several hundred dollars and a service fee of around 4.5% per transaction
