Payment Mechanism

Hi. I'm pretty new to e-commerce and osCommerce looks great. I haven't got my head around how payment options work. Can someone please advise me on the basic principles or refer me to a link?

 

Basically, once I've set everyting up and a customer checks out, what is the process for getting this verified/paid etc via the many agencies? i.e What do I need to do to make the connection between my shop front and something like Worldpay.

There are contributions available for several different payment methods IE: authorize.net(comes w/OSC),Echo,Worldpay,Etc

Thanks. I'm aware of the contributions. However, installing one of these does dot clarify the rest of the process, so any further info as requested, would be much appreciated.
