Advice on Payment Processors

I plan to setup an on-line store with osCommerce in the immediate future.

The decision on a payment processor is a difficult one. I am looking for one with a decent API, decent support and one that has reasonable setup fees and per transaction fees. Of course I would love for the provider to be integrated with osCommerce, but it's not a show stopper.

I do not want to pay 5 percent of the transaction to the payment services provider. This seems like an outrageous amount.

Does anyone have advice? Good (or bad) experiences with particular payment services providers? Payment services providers that you want to recommend?

Thanks,

Matt

My advice is, never pay a setup fee for your gateway. It should come free with your merchant account.

I've a alot of luck with authorize.net as our gateway.

As WizardsandWars said, never pay setup fees. Even if they are posted you can usually get the company to waive them.

I do not have any problems with Authorize.net either and ECHO is also good. Between the two I would go with Authorize.net but that is just my opinion.

AFAIK, the fees are dependent upon the reseller that you use.

Wells Fargo is a well known provider that has reasonable rates. If you are already a customer of theirs then the setup fee is waived.

If you already have a merchant account, check with them as they may already have a deal with a payment processor. If they do, then you will usually get some decent rates.

If you do not already have a merchant account, try to find someone that not only provides a merchant account but also a connection to a payment processor.

What's the difference between a "merchant account" and a "payment processor"? Do you usually have to set up these two things separately?

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I'm hoping to get set up to take online payments in the next week and I can't even keep all the terms straight to know what I'm getting (or what I'm paying for)

gateway -

merchant account -

payment processor -

discount rate -

transaction fee -

I was looking at using Echo, but somebody in another thread warned about their "hidden charges" and said they wanted $750+ to set up the account. I'm also looking at Costco and now Wells Fargo. Any suggestions/warnings are welcome.

Thanks
