Top Bar (My Account, etc.) - Customization Help

I'd like to customize the top bar a little by adding a background image, and perhaps some graphics too. I still want the text that's there, I'd just like to make that bar thicker and add a background image. I've searched the board. I can't find anything. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Can I also change the thickness of that bar there too? How would that be done. I know this is a pain, but where in the CSS would I put it, and what would the code look like to do this. Thanks again.
