fleroux Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Hi folks, without wanting to stirr the pot of cause I was just wondering whether a JSP/JAVA solution is available for this software. Oscommerce appears to be a great product but unfortunately my current infrastructure/expertise/clientele would appeal more to a J2EE solution. So given that I am assuming that this software is only available as a PHP artifact can you perhaps advise where I could find FREE software for a J2EE solution and/or whether you are at all considering making the software available in different technologies. many thanks for your responses.[/b] kind regards francois
Guest Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Why would anyone here want to point you to another solution? :? This is the osCommerce forum. Try Google.
fleroux Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 No need to be smart mate - I honestly wanted to know whether the oscommerce mob is considering making the software available using any of the other main stream technologies (i.e. .net etc.) If not, fair enough, in which case I will piss off and look for another product!! kind regards francois
Guest Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 PHP is it AFAIK. Why on earth confuse things with inferior technologies?
fleroux Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 mate, I'm not here to discuss with you which is better..... Can anyone else please provide some meaningful insight thanks. Zaq, don't bother mate.... kind regards francois
Guest Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Let's see if I can be clearer. I've been following this project since the beginning. Not once has anything other than PHP been considered. Not even once. What more do you need to know? :?
loxly Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 The team is made up of volunteers that are well versed in php and are not going to port the software to another language. This is not a company with departments, where one department works with php and another works with other languages. So the answer is, no, this is only a php based application at this time and for the foreseeable future. I suggest searching not just Google, but go to http://sourceforge.net to look for open source software in other languages as well. No one needed to be rude to answer this simple question. [no external urls in signatures please, kthanks]
fleroux Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 Thanks Deborah - I appreciate your sensible and informative answer. Keep up the good work with your OsCommerce product! kind regards francois

rthrash Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 For a good JSP solution, try ofbiz on sourceforge: www.sf.net/projects/ofbiz Ryan Thrash
Hunkah Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 No one needed to be rude to answer this simple question. No one was rude. HOLY FRIG! Most people in here can't help but be rude!!! I have had as many A-holes answer questions with rude comments as sensible people. I don't know if it is a PHP thing or an open source thing, but for some reason this isn't the only forum that this happens in. Some of the others are like this too. fleroux Don't hold it against OSCommerce, the product speaks for itself. It will probably be worth your time learning php, it seems to be a growning trend. Almost everything seems to be moving towards that direction. The cool thing about this product though is that you don't need to know PHP to use it. Only some general "workings" of it. Like how to install PHP and MySQL on the web server. It isn't very difficult if you follow the directions. I bet you won't find a better E-com program out there. I looked for three weeks straight. I found a few that came close (all PHP based) bet this one was far better. And the support is great (If you weed out the A-holes). To anyone that feels they are A-hole... you can defend yourself under this post!
rthrash Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 JSP solutions are typically more complex, scalable and robust. There are differnt things that you can do with JSP that are cumbersome at best to emulate in PHP. PHP is pretty prevalent on shared servers that are so common. JSP serving, however, is typically not offered. However, I think you'll see PHP 5 will start to bring in some JSP functionality and capabilities. Ryan Thrash
fleroux Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 mate, you're a legend. That will do me for now and I'll keep an eye out for oscommerce in the future. Once again, thanks for the assistance and best of luck with your software!! kind regards francois
fleroux Posted July 30, 2003 Author Posted July 30, 2003 Ryan, thanks again for pointing me in the right direction - it turned out to be exactly what I am after. Thanks again Hunkah, mate, point taken with regards to PHP. I will definately keep my eye out for some if ot's futire release, but my current architecture allreaqdy include J2EE ( JSP, EJB, Web services technology) so at this stage I would prefer to stick with the same flavout of tools/technologies. Again, I can certainly vouch that is alot of folks that use PHP so no dramas there - it seems to be a good product. Thanks again to Ryan, Deborah and Hunkah for their input. kind regards francois
