SEO help/question

Hi Ashley,

My visits and sales have dramatically dropped and am thinking it has to be more then the economy here and likely related to the mostly ignored (because it is so confusing)SEO .

There is only one home page the rest are all product pages.

When I look at the source page of other related sites that show up in searches they seem to show the rel="canonical" = website name URL.

Does this change any of you reply answer?

Thanks for your valuable input.

I was assuming that you are using V4 osCommerce, is that the case ? V4 osC does actually put a rel canonical link on the homepage, the format is like this :

<link href='' rel='canonical' hreflang='' />

so you may miss it at first glance.

You can do fine SEO wise without utilising a rel canonical tag, many sites get them wrong any way. Also it is not a directive, so Google will determine its own canonical version of your URLs.

There's not enough information to start suggesting why there may be a drop in your site traffic.

If you have migrated from a V2 shop AND made provision to preserve your URLs then a drop in traffic is normal. It will only be a small drop and for a relatively short period of time (about a month), then your SEO position returns to normal.

If you did not preserve your URLs then all that built up link equity will be lost. You will have a steep drop off in traffic, and it will take some time to recover your initial position.

They were monitored for a nice bit of time with quite a few redirects created to go to the correct product.

The site has been live for over a year.

Could be the economy, don't believe I'm alone.

Thank you

Ken
