shmerek Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 Hi I am working on a store (it isn't live yet but getting there). I was wondering if you guys could take a look and tell me what you think, I am more concerned about load time and if the navigation system makes any sense. As far as design goes I haven't really touched on it yet so it is very basic. This site is being build in order to try and convert a mail order business into an online business, the customers are specific and very knowledgeable about the products I am providing. http://store.pelleas.ca Thank you in advance for whatever insights you might provide.
HyperJack Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 I waited 30 seconds and your site didn't load. (DSL)
shmerek Posted July 28, 2003 Author Posted July 28, 2003 Curious? it loads for me weird, I am on a dsl as well. It just timed out? Did you get an error message?
Guest Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 Loading time results for: http://store.pelleas.ca/ Loading test content results Number of graphics/scripts: 2 Total graphics size: 15592 bytes Total HTML size: 80000 bytes Total page size: 95592 bytes Load time by modem speed Modem speed: Download time: 14.4k 57.79 seconds 28.8k 31.23 seconds 56k 18.2 seconds ISDN (128k) 10.64 seconds T1 (1.44 MB) 5.22 seconds Warning!: Your loading time is too slow... shmerek Posted July 28, 2003 Author Posted July 28, 2003 Why? Is it the script? it can't be the graphics can it? :?

shmerek Posted July 28, 2003 Author Posted July 28, 2003 Total graphics size: 15592 bytes Total HTML size: 80000 bytes The_Bear Is that an excessive amount of bytes? Anybody know the average size of an average webpage?
HyperJack Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 That's a pretty large page but it should LOAD. Try creating indexes on your tables and contact your hosting company if it's still slow.

Still won't load for you? How do I go about creating indexes for my tables? Could it be the html file that spits out the menu that is f-ing things up?
HyperJack Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 Ok- It loaded and seems to be responding pretty quickly. The menu system is quite screwy. I'm using ie6. It doesn't expand until I click on it (which I didn't know to do since the mouse-over is an arrow) and then it really lags. It's hard to tell that 'Operas/Vocal Works' and 'Artist Recitals' are part of a menu system. They look like part of the store's logo.

I built it on a mac so I have no idea how it renders yet on a pc. I will try to do something to make it more obvious that it is a menu. The navigation system has been the biggest block for me, I have tons of products with the same name and a ton of categories as well. I haven't been able to find a better way to implement it. Thanks for the input.
HyperJack Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 I really don't think that menu is going to work for you. Have a look at some of the category contibutions located here: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...ons/category,11 ://http://www.oscommerce.com/community...s/category,11 Can you classify your products any other way? It's nice to browse by name and label but can you also break it down by different styles? Your store's logo is still named 'oscommerce.gif'. You may want to at least change the Alt text on it. Your 'advance_search.php' page has the 'manufacturer's' and 'categories' box. Should be labels and artists? Personally, i would get rid of everything below the'Labels' box on that page. I would change the button on login.php from 'continue' to 'create account'. This just makes it easier for someone to sign up. Other than those little things, the site seems to work well. And I actually think the overall design is pretty good too. Best of Luck!
shmerek Posted July 29, 2003 Author Posted July 29, 2003 I have looked through the contributions section for quite some time and have yet to find anything that would be functional. None of the dynamic menus work because of the speed. My problem is that I can have up to twenty products with the same name also many of the product names are very long (ie. ELISABETTA AL CASTELLO DI KENILWORTH). Unfortunately I cannot think of a way to reclassify the products, they are all the same thing plus I have a stink load and more coming. I changed the alt text to the logo image as well as made the changes you suggested to the advanced search page and the button. I am still looking to see if I can find a better solution to the navigation but until I find it I guess this will have to do. Thanks for the input, you made me fix a few things I didn't even know where there. :)
