Hey!!!

I am trying to set up osCommerce system on a linux box. Since I don't know the first thing about linux or php, I was wondering if you can help me here.

Is there some sort of guide or manual on how to install? If not could you write the basic commands that will get me started in the installation.

I understood that once the program is installed, it is quite easy to configure it and indevidualise it the way you want. So that is why I think once i get over this problem, I will be able to take care of the rest.

Thank you very much!

okay, heres the story

Got told to do a shopping cart and i got refered to this place.

I dont know anything about PHP or MYSQL.

But im a fast learner.

Meet up with clients today and they said they wanted to use IIS.

I mean WTF, Bad enough i dont know PHP, so getting my head around IIS is extremely difficult.

Then they said they were already using MS SQL so MYSQL is not an option for me.

So overall, i really need alot of guidance..........please.......

Even steps to get this up and running.

I've installed IIS and localhost works.

But when i go "localhost/catalog/install", it shows the error.

I would like to get the website/database/running on my own machine before implementing it.

Plz help a guy in pain

Sam

P.S. MS SQL is not installed yet, could this be the problem?

It won't run with MS SQL out of the box. There will be quite a bit of custom coding to get that to work. To run the default install, you need to have PHP and MySQL installed. In addition, you need to have the IIS (or Apache for most) extensions for PHP installed, as well as the PHP extensions for MySQL.

Just as osCommerce is a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) solution, there are WIMA (Windows/IIS/MS SQL/ASP) solutions. No decent ones are free beer AFAIK, but there are some reasonably priced alternatives. Alternately, you can get LAMP hosting for $50/month or less. IMO, trying to get osCommerce to run with MS SQL is just begging for trouble.

Good luck,

Matt

oh boy,

they are not going to be happy.

Okay so what if i purchased a new box to run Apache/MySQL/PHP just for the website.......will the other database running MS SQL/IIS be a conflict?

When u say LAMP, can i use Windows instead of linux?

You could run it in IIS with PHP and MySQL if you want. The PHP and MySQL are mandatory. Web server and OS are mainly configuration changes (e.g. a lot of the file permission instructions assume Linux and have to be adapted to MS Windows). You can run both MySQL and MS SQL on the same box if need be. They won't conflict. It's just that both are resource intensive. In fact, it is not generally recommende to run IIS and MS SQL on the same machine. However, if the machine is only going to be running this one website, it will probably be all right.

Good luck,

Matt
