Help required - User setting his preferred language

I would like to have a button or something for a user to set his preferred language (via a cookie I presume). I haven't got a glue how to go about this - can anybody help

There is a language box where the user can choose their language - if you are looking at the standard oscommerce it is in the right column towards the bottom
