Guest Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 Most emails from my new store work, but some fail. In particular, those going to my other domain (dixonmarine.com) fail from osCommerce but work when testing independently with my normal MS Outlook email software. If someone could give me a clue on this, I'd appreciate it...I'm afraid that some customers will not get the Welcome email (etc). Here's what the error message says: -- A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: [email protected] SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<[email protected]>: host dixonmarine.com [64.5.32.40]: 550-Verification failed for <[email protected]> 550-Unrouteable address 550 Sender verify failed
Guest Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 Can you send email to [email protected] from a regular mail client? It seems that it might be an MX record issue. Do you have an MX record set up for advantagecomposites.com in DNS? You also might need a PTR record for the IP of your mail server that resolves to the name of the mail server that you have set in the MX record. For example: MX advantagecomposites.com mail.myhost.com A mail.myhost.com 192.168.1.100 PTR 192.168.1.100 mail.myhost.com myhost.com can be something of yours like advantagecomposites.com, or it could be one that your host provides. Good luck, Matt
Guest Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 Thanks. I'm going to forward your reply to my hosting service. It's a new account, and I could've sworn that it all worked before. They recently installed my SSL cert and gave me a permanent IP address. Something may not have been done in completion. Sending email to [email protected] works in that I get no bounce message, but MS Outlook doesn't receive anything (an account is setup to check that account for inbound mail.) Brian
Guest Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 I tried telnetting to the SMTP port of advantagecomposites.com. I get a response from ananke.affordablehost.com, so to my mind that is what should be in the MX record, not advantagecomposites.com (see below). I think that if they make that single change, things will work, since ananke.affordablehost.com has both A and PTR records. They could also update the records for advantagecomposites.com (and I would make a mail.advantagecomposites.com, even if it is going to be pointed to the same place) to have both A and PTR records. I have appended the results from nslookup for advantagecomposites.com. Good luck, Matt > set type=MX> advantagecomposites.com Server: nscache1 Address: 68.168.160.2 advantagecomposites.com MX preference = 0, mail exchanger = advantagecomposites.com advantagecomposites.com nameserver = ns32.affordablehost.com advantagecomposites.com nameserver = ns31.affordablehost.com advantagecomposites.com internet address = 216.46.192.145 > set type=A > advantagecomposites.com Server: nscache1 Address: 68.168.160.2 Non-authoritative answer: Name: advantagecomposites.com Address: 216.46.192.145 > set type=PTR > 216.46.192.145 Server: nscache1 Address: 68.168.160.2 *** nscache1 can't find 145.192.46.216.in-addr.arpa.: Non-existent domain
Guest Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 There were two problems: On my cpanel for the hosted account, I noticed that it said to use SMTP, not sendmail, for sending email. I changed the osCommerce setting to use SMTP and email to/from our store now works. Second problem is at my other hosting service...all email to that domain fails. This helped 'hide' the problem with the osCommerce settings. We're solving this issue separately. Thanks for all your help. Brian
